Domain judgement decides these programmes. Technology scales them.
Hemanth Holla has spent twenty-two years on supply chain planning problems, and the conclusion he has reached is not a fashionable one: technology rarely decides whether these programmes work. Domain judgement does. Technology is how you scale it once you have it.
He started as a production and quality engineer on a GE shop floor. The two decades since were spent implementing planning systems in real operating environments — finite production scheduling, master scheduling and MRP, supply and distribution planning, available-to-promise and order promising, network design and optimisation — across pipe, paper tissue, agricultural chemicals, foodservice equipment, electric motors, high tech, retail and CPG, in both India and the United States, at Oracle, Infosys and Inspirage.
More recently he built a supply chain product management practice from scratch at Tredence and led it as Senior Director and Product Head, rolling out a supply chain command centre, an inventory control tower and predictive supply risk management — through ideation, storyboarding, engineering and deployment at client sites, with revenue responsibility for the practice.
Portolane is what that experience argues for: a firm where domain comes first, and technology amplifies it.
